Avoid a Messy Painting Job!
Painting can be a messy endeavor. If you have a house full of kids and maybe a dog or cat running around, it can really get messy! But if you take some common sense precautions, you can save money by reusing many of your supplies and also finish the job without any mess to speak of. First, when you go to buy your brushes and rollers, you’ll find many options available to you. Find nice high quality materials because you can wash them out and reuse again and again.
While your painting, keep a wet rag or paper towel handy so that you can clean smaller spills or spots right when they happen. If you stay on top of the little things, you’ll finish the job cleaner (and happier!).
After a job is complete, promptly clean pans, brushes and rollers with soap and water. Don’t let them sit around for an hour before cleaning them out, or you’ll have quite a time with it. If you are using a sprayer, you may consider flushing the sprayer with mineral spirits to get all of the lines and valves thoroughly cleaned. Read the cleaning instructions on the sprayer for the best advice.
Lastly, disposing of paint is a big concern. Never pour paint of any kind down your drain or into a drainage ditch. Not only is it terrible for the environment, it can cause plumbing issues as well. Find out if your garbage collector will take the empty cans, or even better, take cans along with to be discarded paint to a community collecting facility. Most dumps and landfills have special areas for dropping off materials like these. If you’re unsure, call the local sanitation department.
