How often should I repaint my house?

If you own property, you know that there are times when it seems many areas need to be improved at once. Sometimes it’s not feasible to paint the entire building, and a decision must be made as to what should be your first focus. That decision may depend on one of several factors, from something as simple as routine maintenance to a larger plan such as readying a home for sale. Whatever your purpose, giving part of your property a fresh coat of paint is a simple way to update the entire look.

In our part of Australia, the weather is mostly temperate. However, occasionally we see strong storms that result in water or wind damage, weakening wooden structures over time. Proper maintenance includes painting touch ups to protect a home from further damage. Keeping up with the weathered portions of the home and repainting as they come up is one approach. Another solution is to make a list of areas that would benefit from updated coverage and paint in order of necessity. Either way, keeping on top of the needed projects can save a lot of money and frustration down the road.

Another reason that a home is sometimes painted is simply that it is a new purchase and you want to make it your own. This is often done prior to moving in, and is a good time to paint large areas or even the whole interior. Later, once belongings have been moved in, it will be more difficult to provide painters access to some areas. With an open space to work in, the technicians can get the project completed quickly and thoroughly without much inconvenience.

If selling is the plan for your property, or renting, your goal will be to paint whatever portion will give it the highest curb appeal. This could be the entire exterior of the home. In the event that you’re unable to do that, however, consider painting any details or features that are in disrepair, or are showing signs of wear. Peeling or flaking paint, storm damaged areas, or areas that are dated may bring about a better response if they’re improved with a new look.

There are obviously many things to consider when painting your property, depending on your situation.

A professional painting company can walk through with you to give you a good idea of what items will need for improvement, as well as a detailed cost breakdown. This may help you in your decision-making process.
