Important Repairs to Do Before Painting

Painting is a relatively quick and inexpensive way to transform the look of your house. Painting can give new life to a house that looks drab and dull. If you are tired of the same old look, new paint can make your home feel like a completely different place. If the interior of your house is looking worn out, a fresh coat of paint can help it feel fresh and clean.

There are many benefits to updating the paint on the interior or exterior of your home. Before you pull out your paint brush, however, take some time to make the necessary repairs around your home first. Residential painting before you make repairs will leave you with a finished product that does not meet your standards and can result in the need to repaint in the near future.  Concentrate on these essentials:

Clean the areas

Cleaning the areas you plan to paint is not really a repair, but it is an important step in preparation. A clean surface allows the paint to adhere properly and go on evenly. You will end up with a finished product that looks much better if you take the time required to clean the areas of your house that you intend to paint.

Remove cracked or peeling paint

Painting over cracked or peeling paint will sabotage the look and longevity of your paint project. You will not have a smooth finished product if you simply put the new paint over the old, damaged paint. Painting over damaged paint will also cause your new project to start peeling and cracking much sooner than it would have otherwise.  In order to get the smooth finished product that you want, remove cracked or peeling paint before you start painting.

Fill in holes

It is common to have small holes on the interior walls of your home. Spots, where pictures used to hang, damage from rowdy kids, or a nick from the last time you moved furniture, are all spots that need to be repaired before painting. Small holes can often be easily repaired with a little bit of spackle. If you have larger damage and do not have experience in drywall repair, you need to bring in professional help in order to get the finished product that you desire.

Replace damaged siding

Siding on the exterior of your home can become damaged over time. If there are spots that are seriously damaged and will not respond to simple repairs, you need to replace them. The difficulty of this type of project depends on the scope of the damage and where it is in relation to the other siding. If you cannot easily replace badly damaged siding on your own, bring in professional help. The quality of your finished product will reflect the condition of the siding underneath the paint.

If you want a high-quality paint job, do not start painting until you make the necessary repairs. Yes, it is quicker to simply start painting, but the quality and longevity of your finished product will be negatively impacted if you do not make the necessary repairs first.
